Transatlantic Summer Academy on Sustainability | University Students Exploring Sustainability from an Intercultural Perspective | Bremen, Germany

Experience new approaches in resolving ecological issues, work and live in a German - US-American group of young people and explore sustainability from an intercultural perspective

Global change, ecosystem degradation and resource limitations are challenges today’s diverse human societies are facing and have to endure. Hence, “Sustainable Development” has become an agenda pursued by many, if not all, nations in the world. Due to the global significance of these ecological issues it is all the more important to cooperate and find a common working basis to resolve them. Intercultural difficulties or a different approach to sustainability, dependent on one’s cultural background, should not be the reason for this plan not to succeed. This is why this innovative Transatlantic Summer Academy now explores sustainability from an intercultural perspective.

The three-week Transatlantic Summer Academy is organized by InterCultur gGmbH (subsidiary of AFS Germany) and Jacobs University Bremen, in close cooperation with AFS Intercultural Programs USA. It brings together university students from Germany and the USA to work on questions like the following: How is development related to environmental problems? What is sustainable development? How do people in the world perceive sustainability? How can we solve the problems that arise when different cultural values meet? The course will end on a positive and optimistic note with a discussion on alternative approaches such as sustainable degrowth and forms of development that are socially inclusive and just and ecologically sound.

The Transatlantic Summer Academy is characterized by its innovative combination of university lectures, hands-on experiences and practical intercultural workshops. An experiential learning approach leading to a very deep and lasting understanding of the topic addressed. Coupled with the intercultural exchange made possible by working intensively within a German - US-American group, this makes this program a unique intercultural learning experience!

The Transatlantic Summer Academy takes place from July 20 to August 9, 2017. It is being held in English and is open to German and US-American university students with a demonstrable interest in environmental issues and/or intercultural encounters. Thanks to the generous financial support of the German Federal Government the participation conditions are really convenient!
